About The Artist
"While most of the kids
in my class worked hard at trying to finish their maths test, I'd
be scribbling cartoon pictures. That was my preferred
method of "concentration". I've been like that all
my life - I see things in pictures and sounds as opposed to
numbers.
I have often wondered who my real artist influences are... and got
to thinking that in many respects I am predominantly influenced
by sound. It's a strange theme but a lot of what ends up on
canvas has been really influenced by the record (CD) that was
playing in the background at the time or a conversation I may have
had or even overheard. My work is predominantly created as an
auditory response. I can only imagine what my work would be like
if I only listened to Billy Connolly all day...or even Frank Zappa
for that matter. Actually, I might have to try doing that - ha!
I have had the great
fortune of seeing Salvador Dali's work at Museo
Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid. This is where Picasso's Guernica
is displayed also. I got to experience the awe of their
work first hand during a 16 month world
trip.
When I
got home I loaded up on canvases and oils and went to work. I came
up with CAKU Art as a way of giving my work it's own identity as
apposed to solely focusing the attention on me as the artist. Some
artists would perhaps consider this to be a backwards step when it
comes to "branding" yourself as an artist...as the whole
concept is centred around the painting instead of the
painter. The ironic thing is that the result to this
"branding" the work more so than the artist decision has
been quite successful for me and my work".
